When anime was a niche thing in English-speaking regions, dubs were a lower priority and budget/quality. There are a lot of anime fans online who judge English dubs because they can. Fans can't judge when subs act up because they don't know. I don't know how dubs are for recent shows because I don't watch recent shows and I'd personally like to know how dubs are now rather than cherry-pick something from the early 2000s or 90s like people who dismiss all dubs tend to do.

Dubs nowadays have a tendency to completely rewrite the meaning of dialogue and significantly change the traits of characters. Some have it worse than others, but because of the same group of people from the west coast are almost always working on the translation and voice acting of most modern english dubs, it becomes really hard to trust almost any english dub that comes out these days. What i'm wondering is why its mainly english dubs that have this issue. You dont get this type of thing from dubs from other countries.

Traditionally anime and video games in the US were non union jobs. So you had a pretty big selection bias where you had people showing up to dub these things that were so shitty they couldn't get a real voice acting job.
Though this hasn't been true for 20 or so years, That history still casts a long shadow. The bar was set very low initially.

The most notorious one is the funimation Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid english dub. It caused a shitstorm, although it's been around 6 years since that happened so it's fairly old. This patriarchy scene is the one most people know about (Episode 12).
I think there was more shid like this in the dub but I can't really prove it since I haven't watched this thing and I don't want to.

President Clinton being mentioned in Azumanga is notable, although there was many changes in the dub. I can understand some of the changes made (made to appeal to western audiences who would have not understand half of the jokes made) but i still get the feeling that its just dishonest and i would've studied Japanese culture or whatever to understand the nature of x joke then expect changes from the source material to make it more palatable.

It just doesn't sit well with people how an obnoxious pop culture reference was forced into this show. That "cake is a lie" meme aged so poorly that the portal 2 team intentionally avoided referencing it because they were sick of it.
But personally I have more of an issue with how the tone of the conversation was changed dramatically. In the sub, Suzuha kind of ignores Rintaro. In the dub the scene is transformed into bickering, with them talking back at each other over a dumb cherry. Suzuha in particular comes off as more petty and snarky. Now, changing some mundane dialog might not seem like a big deal, but in an anime where a big part of the focus is on mundane situations (like the first half of steins;gate) these trivial dialogs are important. In a slice of life work, changing the tone of how characters talk to each other is like changing major plot points in a story of a different kind; that's because the mundane conversations are the whole point.
But I assume dubs aren't always this bad, I've heard the Death Note dub is good for example.

This exactly, and the dub makes these kinds of weird dialogue changes all the time. Suzuha is rewritten to be a complete cunt to Okabe for no discernable reason and I hate it so much.

Steins;Gate´s english sub is interesting since they translated japanese chan speak to then contemporary 4chan lingo. But nowadays its pretty much unrecognizable.

Do you know why German dubs are sometimes even considered to be better than the Japanese Dub?
It's simply because German VAs don't try to make themselves sound stupid trying to replicate the Japanese dub by changing their voices like all of the terrible English dubs do. I certainly struggle to watch anything dubbed after 2005. Ironically I enjoy the cheesy dubs from the 90s and early 2000s. It's mostly nostalgia for the days of watching it on TV and getting my hands on any VHS or DVD I could find through buying, trades, renting, and other outlets during my youth.

Sorry but english dub watchers are stupid NIGGERS as it's nothing less than spitting on the creator's vision, a complete insult to them. imagine someone like Hayao Miyazaki spending years crafting every single detail from the dialogue to the cultural nuances to the visuals, all with intent and precision, and then you go and watch some bastardized cut-down disney dub that tears apart those subtleties, leaving behind a cheap hollow shell of the original, which then gets unfairly associated with him as if it reflects his vision. Even worse when it gets fully mangled into another language, erasing whatever soul the work once had.
Do you really think any official dub studio in the U.S. works relentlessly to hammer the character’s essence into the voice actors, making them understand the context of every line and the emotional weight behind it? no shot. most dub actors just get handed a script and are told to read lines. it’s treated like a part-time gig, not an assignment where they study and embody the character fully. This lack of respect isn’t new. Is it even a surprise that a company based in the US like A.D. Vision took advantage of the process? they churned out things like their troll dub of ghost stories that OBLITERATED the original series in the west >>>/a/282/ and anyone trying to watch it as it was intended gets laughed at for even suggesting it. And don’t get me started on fandubs. I have not watched a single fandub where there isn’t awkward delivery and retarded attempts to mimic the Japanese high-pitched voices. It creates this extremely strange hybrid of japanese and american styles that doesn’t fit naturally in either language. The mix of cultural elements feels forced and makes the entire thing come across as unnatural and out of place. Then even with subs you have to pick translations carefully to find teams that worked tirelessly to preserve the same meaning and nuance otherwise you’re still getting something warped. But watching a dub? that’s not about convenience it’s straight-up apathy. it’s choosing to ignore all of that to consume a watered-down version of something brilliant, made bland for mass consumption. With modern anime, though, this issue might matter less now because most studios couldn’t care less anymore as they outsource production to third-world shit-holes, cutting corners and churning out low-quality garbage that lacks any of the original precision or passion. So when the creators themselves don’t respect their own work it’s hard to expect anything better from the dubs. But even with that, the core problem with American dubs hasn’t changed. They still try to cram something fundamentally foreign into a completely different cultural lens, watering it down into something unrecognizable. If you really want to experience a work as the creator intended, the best way is to watch it with subtitles but not just any subtitles as you should stick to approved fansub groups that actually care about preserving the original meaning, tone, and cultural nuances (NOT FUCKING CRUNCHYROLL).
And if you absolutely have to adapt it for another audience at least don’t half-ass it with a dub. Go all out and remake it entirely in your own style with permission from the original creators. At least then it becomes its own version, a separate work that can be seen as another option and not a replacement for the original which should not be treated in the same lens as these adaptations.
