If you're unfamiliar with it, ADV Dub is the entity behind producing the irreverent English dub for Ghost Stories. The narrative they presented claimed that the anime performed abysmally in Japan, both in terms of sales and reception, which is far from the truth. Regrettably, a significant portion of the English-speaking Western audience accepted this account as gospel, and did not do their own research on this topic. Contrary to popular belief, Ghost Stories is considered as one of the best horror anime made, with a lot of childhood nostalgia tied to it.
I will be sharing a lot of resources you can look into to confirm this for yourself, and maybe then you could watch the anime as it was intended.
 ∧▁∧
(ФωФ) Oh, Ghost Stories? Wait, hold on a second... You actually fell for ADV Dub's story and didn't smell anything fishy? Hahaha!
 ㇇ ㇇

Here is what Ste7en Foster, writer and director of Ghost Stories's English dub, said in his biography, The Last Alias: True stories and a tale that might be
(pages 83-84, eBook version)
The show is basically a lame Scooby-Doo ripoff with a cat where the dog
should be. Five plucky youngsters—in this case, elementary school kids—
battle a ghost-of-the-week each episode. Each episode is a totally contained
show. Only the pilot episode really demands to be watched in a certain
position. The others you could shuffle and never be the worse for wear. The
show’s animation isn’t bad, but it’s nothing special. The show just paddles
along on its mediocre legs, not really harming or healing anyone in the
process.
There’s an episode about an artist ghost, a snow ghost, a headless biker
ghost, etc. The violence is fairly intense. Some of the scenes are a little rough
for younger viewers and the ending song that rolls over the credits is called
“Sexy Sexy,” so it seems a little mature to be strictly a kids’ show. But it’s so
juvenile it doesn’t really feel like it’s for an older audience either. Maybe
that’s why it tanked in Japan? Who knows.

(ФωФ) Oh, so we've got a wannabe "Scooby-Doo" here, channeling your inner ghost detective, Mr. Steven Foster? chuckles

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/学校の怪談_(テレビアニメ)
It aired on Fuji TV affiliate stations from October 22, 2000, to March 25, 2001. There was also a special episode broadcast on August 24 of the same year. The average viewership rating was 12.2%, the highest rating was 14.0%, and the lowest rating was 10.6%
As a point of reference:
1) In the 2000s, a successful mainstream anime might have achieved ratings in the range of 10-20%.
2) Late-night anime, which typically cater to a more dedicated fanbase and might be considered more "niche," often have ratings under 5%, sometimes even under 1%.

With the conclusion of this series, the long-running collaboration between Fuji TV and Studio Pierrot temporarily ended. It is also the last new anime to begin airing during Fuji TV's golden time slot. Five years after the original broadcast, in 2006, it was rebroadcast on TOKYO MX, and in 2014 and 2016, it was rebroadcast on Chiba Television (Chiba TV). The special episode "Headless Rider!! Curse of Death" was originally broadcast as a special episode after the final episode (Episode 19), five months after the initial run. However, in reruns on TOKYO MX and Animax, it was broadcast before the actual final episode. In the case of Chiba TV's reruns in 2014 and 2016, it was aired as the actual final episode.
Regarding the background of such an arrangement, North American media reports that since this work was unpopular and a commercial failure in Japan, Animax, which wanted to recoup production costs, provided only minimal conditions and was not involved in other matters. However, this is inaccurate. In Japan, the anime achieved high average viewership ratings of 12.2% with a peak of 14.0%. It even ranked 5th in the 2021 horror anime rankings, indicating a resilient popularity that continues to this day.

(ФωФ) C'mon, c'mon! What are you waiting for?! Let's get to the DVD and VHS sales numbers!
 ㇇ ㇇

(File 1-2) From: https://product-sc.sakuhindb.com/product/j/anime/7_School_20ghost_20story/DVD/salesrank.html and https://web.archive.org/web/20130306082822/https://product-sc.sakuhindb.com/product/j/anime/7_School_20ghost_20story/DVD/salesrank.html Ghost Stories achieved a sales number of 20,000 in VHS Collection and 15,000 in DVD Collection. It averaged a 5,000 average per volume DVD, and almost a 8000 average per volume VHS which comes to 13,000 per volume and as far as I know these have long shelf lifes still selling to this day so the number might actually be bigger.
1)The first first number you see is the sales amount.
2) middle is the exact last date that sales number was pulled
3) the bottom text was when it was last updated.
(File 3) From: https://web.archive.org/web/20121013002135/http://product-sc.sakuhindb.com/product/j/anime/7_Ah_21_20My_20Goddess_20_28Oh_20My_20Goddess_21_2C_20Aa_21_20Megamisama_29/DVD/salesrank.html This is another very popular anime called "Oh my goddess" and although yeah there is a gap between the sales of Ghost Stories you can still see that it wasn't that big at all.
(File 4) It's hard to find a reference point on how many sales a anime was considered popular, so here is one I found on a regular pornsite's /a/'s archive. If you have a better one for 2000s feel free to link it. From what I got though A successful anime title during the 2000s in Japan would often sell between 10,000 to 20,000 copies per volume for DVD and for VHS it was around 10,000.
All in all Ghost Stories certainly made its money back and maybe even doubled it or even more you cannot forget how many times this was rebroadcasted on Japanese TV as well.

https://detail.chiebukuro.yahoo.co.jp/qa/question_detail/q12283639937
(2023) Q. Why did they stop rebroadcasting school ghost stories? Is there no demand for it, perhaps?

I remember when I was in elementary school, they used to rebroadcast it on TV every year. I've heard that Episode 4 wasn't aired due to the presence of tsunami footage. Occasionally, I think Kanto TV still broadcasts it though.

A. School Ghost Stories might seem too old for kids these days (^^;; For people of our generation, even as adults, we can still enjoy it though.

This is not everything (continued in next post)

Nice work OP. Steven foster is a Melon Addict and i fully expect himself to go neck himself. At first i thought the english dub was funny but as i watched on i felt something was wrong but i didn't know what it was, I think i realised what they did was fucked up. Imagine being the original creator of ghost stories, Wouldn't you want the American aduience to feel the way the japanese feel about your work? Wouldn't you want your work represented accurately instead of defamed because they "thought it was funny"?
A team of animators spendt hours of grueling work for what? For funny jokes about doublya bush? Rap being satanic? Shoudn't this get americans interested into yokai? Even if this performed terribly in america it's no excuse to do whatever the fuck you want with it because you don't think anyone would care about it. I don't like it when people take creatve liberties and when i watch/read something i would like to do so with content in its purist form instead of taking the easy route.
The dub for azumanga had the right actors, but they went down a similar route like the dub for ghost stories. Dated political reffrences no one will give a damn about, Removing japanese content and adding american content because apparantly americans are too fucking stupid to study japanese culture or fucking google shit, i mean come on. Should something like a read bean roll be changed to "jelly doughnut"? I say no. Its their culture and if i dont understand it then i have to lurk moar.

Now we will wander into the Nico Nico Douga's wiki section comment section about this anime and list a few interesting things we found from what people thought of the dub to the reactions they had with the Ghost Stories anime.

https://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/学校の怪談
A television anime depicting the protagonists' efforts to exterminate the yokai infesting their school. It aired on the Fuji TV network from October 2000 to March 2001. Although it was popular during its time, it ended after two cours due to being produced as an interim show between "GTO" and "One Piece.

https://dic.nicovideo.jp/b/a/学校の怪談/211- From newest (2023) to oldest (2007)
- I looked on Wikipedia and found information about the HD Remastered Version (tentative) (scheduled for release after April 2024), including Episode 3 "Am I Pretty?," which will feature "Kuchisake Onna" (Slit-Mouthed Woman). I'm glad about this.
- It's a favorite tale that the anime version of "School Ghost Stories" failed in the United States, and then the rights were messed around with, resulting in a nonsensical gag anime.
- I was scared and couldn't watch it well when I was a kid, so now I'm watching it again on YouTube, and the voice actors are amazing. They were criticized a lot for being a bridge from GTO, but it's still plenty interesting and scary, lol.
- The "Kuchisake Onna" episode got shelved, but the "Nopperabou Rider" episode wasn't broadcast in the Mutsugorou Kingdom special either. And then, Mutsugorou was severely criticized on the 2channel commentary board.
- I think 2channel basically prohibited live commentary, and that's why it became a part of this anime's board? It was the trigger for that.
- Was the episode with the Slit-Mouthed Woman banned from broadcasting due to some group's influence? Everyone is getting fooled by the nonsense of that swindler Amano Michihiro. Both the wiki and 2channel, no one involved, yet too many believe it all. Do some research on your own, okay~?
- I really want to see a sequel to the anime "School Ghost Stories." Someone please create a petition to make a sequel to "School Ghost Stories." I really want someone to sign the petition.
- Sunday 7:30 pm on Fuji TV was enough with GTO and School Ghost Stories! P.A. Works' anime was enough! We didn't need One Piece! By the way, on the fan site for School Ghost Stories, Yomotsu Net, One Piece ranked second on the list of disliked characters. (Leo was first)
- I remember it strongly, but it was only 2 cours (two seasons), huh. It must mean it was of good quality. But man, I really hated One Piece...
- I hope they remake the anime version of School Ghost Stories and bring it back.
- Personally, I felt this was one show that marked the end of the ghost story boom that had been going on since entering elementary school. Of course, it ended on a high note, but that made it all the more regrettable.
- I found out from watching the DVDs of the anime after a long time, it's even more interesting than what I remembered. The story of the nurse's curse made me sob. The ending is also a really good story. Watching it as an adult, you can see the quality, and it's twice as enjoyable. There's a lot of mention about there being a lot of panty shots, but there aren't actually that many. Well, I guess it's the influence of starting off with a panty joke in the first episode, haha. It's interesting to see that Satsuki's voice actress was Kawakami-san. Since she has passed away, a sequel is probably impossible. It's a shame they couldn't cover all the ghost stories, considering how good it is.
- I revisited the anime on DVD after a long time, and it's more interesting than what I remembered. I cried a lot during the story of the cursed nurse. The ending is also very good. Watching it now as an adult, you can truly appreciate the quality, and it's enjoyable a second time around. While the scariness has decreased by half, the cuteness of the female characters that appear is still vibrant.
- When it was broadcast overseas, the script was drastically altered. Just like Beast Wars (Japanese gag dub) when it aired in Japan. It's gone too far with the nonsense.

(Rebroadcasted 2017-2014)
- The marathon had a highest rating of 96.0%. Masterpieces don't fade away. (2017)
- So there was a marathon... I feel like my soul was received; can't watch it again, huh? It's depressing. Wanted to see everyone's comments.(2017)
- Hope they do another marathon next year. (2017)
- Hope they'll broadcast it again next year~ (2017)
- Congratulations on the anime being re-broadcast on Chiba TV! But I can't watch Chiba TV, so I'm in tears. (2014)
- I'm watching the re-broadcast after a long time. It's nostalgic. The struggle between wanting to see panties and being scared. (2014)
- Seeing it now, it might not be as scary as I thought, but when I watched "School Ghost Stories" as a kid, it was way scarier than I remember. Like the story about Datto. (2014)

Almost done here (continued in next post)

On 2channel there were around 90 different general threads made about Ghost Stories actually all archived under a single link which now is pretty much dead so that sucks...
Title: "School Ghost Stories" Past Log Archive (Thread 1-28) URL: http://www.geocities.com/gakkai_logbox/index.html
Here is another collection of posts I found directly from 2channel there are even posts from 2001 that were reposted maybe those threads are still alive somewhere.

https://anime2.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/ranimeh/1169032588/ (2007)
- This thread is for discussing school ghost stories. Studio Pierrot produced it. It's a shame the 3rd episode was canceled.
- I want the anime to come back!!!!!! If they replayed everything up to the last episode (excluding specials) and then aired new stories from there, that would be great. Well, they could also replay just the first episode and then air new ones.
- It's still in the Showa thread, and now there are two separate threads.
- Satsuki, Momoko-san, Keiichiro in the beginning, Satsuki's mom and dad, Kaya and Tengu, everyone loves them, yet because of the panty shots, it's only seen as a panty anime, and it's sad. Panties should just disappear!
- Nostalgic! After watching this anime, I was scared of taking baths and desperately remembered all the weaknesses of each yokai. I was a elementary school student back then.
- How many times did the server crash due to SexySexy...
- That annoying woman who ruined the third episode by making baseless complaints, I bet she's protesting properly this time too? Seriously, go to hell. (referencing episode 3)

https://hayabusa6.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/ranimeh/1291414861/882-982 (2010-2015)
- Ah, nostalgic anime. Not that it's completely unknown, but it's the kind of nostalgic anime they might occasionally show on Asahi Broadcasting, isn't it? For people who watched it in real-time, it's a unique nostalgia. At the end, when Baikinman possessed Kāya, he regained his body and left? But they meet again and it ends, I remember that well.
- Today I have a day off work, so I'm watching the DVD from the beginning. Next is the 4th volume, but Shirotabi → Anamane → Merry-san, all three episodes are good stories.
- It's been ten years since then, but I can't help but focus on the panties I didn't care about back then.
- During the time when School Ghost Stories was being broadcast, it was popular in my class. Wasn't the viewership good?
- I think it exceeded 10% if I recall correctly. It was probably on Wikipedia.
- Why did School Ghost Stories end while crappy shows like Iron Arm Dash continued?

https://mao.5ch.net/test/read.cgi/ranimeh/1584769032?v=pc (2020-2022)
- It's the 20th anniversary this year, huh? Hope they release a Blu-ray BOX.
- I've been watching D Anime up to a certain point, and it's a really well-made anime. The direction is detailed, and the animation is stable. At the time, I was in 5th grade, and it was spot-on for me. But if today's kids watch it, I wonder if our generation's school buildings would be considered old buildings in reverse.
- Tomorrow marks the 21st anniversary, huh?
- Congratulations on the 21st anniversary of the broadcast start!
- Are the surnames of the main characters derived from station names? Miyano-shita Station (Hakone Tozan Railway) Kakinoki Station (JR East Tadami Line) Aoyama Station (Located in Iwate, Niigata, and Aichi) Koigakubo Station (Seibu Railway)

I wonder why they replaced episode 3? Having the slit-mouth woman in an episode not only makes sense but would've been super fucking cool.

Coming from a country that had a proper dub of the series, despite not being what I'd regard as a "deep" anime, it does have a thoughtful theme behind it, that of things that are abandoned and forgotten due to to progress and development. Even if it didn't, what would be wrong with just being a fun episodic series? It's messed up that a guy with this line of reasoning even had a job as a writer and director.

Interesting, shame the anime's reputation took this hit. Making a fake narrative like this was unnecessary and shit. Still, I'm glad the joke dub exists. Stupid dub comedies like Ghost Stories, Kung Pao, Sealab 2021, and Punch Punch Forever! make me giggle like a dumb baby.
