I keep thinking about this anime despite not having watched it in a while, probably because it serves as a point of comparison for the many similar anime that are never quite as good. It makes me wonder how Azumanga Daioh succeeds where others fail. The show's understanding of comedic structure (inherited from the manga) certainly helps. For some reason, even an elementary grasp of comedy is absent in a lot of anime, especially similar moe or slice-of-life shows, and Azumanga Daioh hits it out of the park there, but what I can't figure out is what makes the characters so interesting. Especially in the manga, they always felt fairly realistic even with their exaggerated personalities. They fall into recognizable archetypes for the most part, but something keeps them from being boring or one-note. My best guess is that it's the way they interact with each other, acting different depending on who's around. The dynamics between the characters almost take precedence over their individual dispositions. As someone with a passing interest in writing, but little no working knowledge, I find it engaging to consider. What do you think?
