My process for drawing pictures like this is pretty unusual, because I draw with a M+KB.
Usually, I don't use a paper sketch as a basis, but for this one I did in fact have a paper reference that I used. From then I'll create a digital reference to use as the basis for the digital version, and from then I'll draw out different "chunks" of the piece based on where the light is hitting the subject. If I were to create an analogue to traditional drawing, it's like I draw the white parts, rather than the black parts.
Then I will separate parts of the image into different segments based on the material, i.e "leather", "hair", "cloth", "coat", etc. This is because I typically do coloring and texturing based on the materials, and I like to keep it organized just in case I need to redo/ touch up different segments of the piece.
The final part I do is the actual linework, where I will typically just outline the piece and fill it in with black. This was the first time I didn't use a textured brush for the linework, to experiment.
