A thread to discuss and share any kind of metal music. As long as it's metal, it belongs here!

An encyclopedia of metal bands:
https://www.metal-archives.com

A torrent site exclusively for all kinds of metal music (Requires you make an account but it's very worth it, their library is huge):
https://en.metal-tracker.com

I'll start the thread off with one of my personal favorites, a dark ambient black metal EP by a Russian band called The Last Three Winters. The EP's subject is the Dyatlov Pass incident, where a group of Russian hikers died in the mountains under mysterious circumstances. The entire EP is just over 15 minutes but it's a wild ride from start to finish.

Disturbeds new album is honestly kinda bland. Some of the songs are pretty decent over all butit feels like a metallica affect where over time the band kinda mellows out and you find yourself nostalgic for its early years.

I used to listen to Disturbed when I was in high school. I haven't checked up on them since they made that god-awful cover of The Sound of Silence. I still listen to their song Stricken every now and then. I really like that song.

Today at work I slacked off to watch part of a documentary about Ozzy which was playing on the TV. It was really interesting, it went in-depth into his journey through the 70s and 80s and talked a lot about his drug use. The documentary was God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, for anyone who's interested.

I'd forgotten how unique his voice is. And it's so easy for him to sing. Don't get me wrong, the doc showed he puts a lot of effort into his shows but how he sings, it just comes so easy to him.

I loved Life Beyond The Spheres. There is a sense that they put a lot of effort into this album and it paid off. The guitar solo in Damnation was awesome, and the lyrics were interesting as well.

I saw Rotting Christ and Behemoth play at a metal festival many years ago. Many mosh pits were had over Rotting Christ. I lost my shoe in one of the pits. Later I found a drunk viking dude in the crowd who was holding his hands up and my shoe was on one of his hands. I walked up to him and pointed at my feet, which were missing one shoe. He bowed down and put the shoe on my foot. Then he stood up and we hugged and laughed. I was also quite hammered.

Rotting Christ were promoting their at-the-time new album, Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού. The album title is Greek for "Do what thou wilt" which is a saying attributed to Alister Crowley. It's a really good album.

Are there any albums you are looking forward to? Overkill released a new single yesterday, and it was good. The Wings of War was good but not great, and this one seems like it will be an improvement. I am also looking forward to the new Insomnium. The addition of Jani Liimatainen has made the band more interesting.

Their absolute best album is the Year of Decay from 1989. For this album, they keep their trademark thrashiness but also experiment. In contrast to Metallica, this experiment worked artistically. Songs like Skullcrusher are a little slow and doomy, but it is a great song. The Year of Decay is my least favourite track, but it is probably one of the better ballads done by a thrash band. Who Tends the Fire is also very eerie. As for full-blown thrash tracks, you cannot go wrong with Time to Kill, Elimination, I Hate, and E.vil N.ever D.ies. My current favourite track is I Hate because those normalfags are annoying. As for other songs, you should check out the five-part self-titled Overkill quintology. E.vil N.ever D.ies is part 4. Check out the track Ironbound, Bitter Pill, Electric Rattlesnake, Shine On, the Wrecking Crew, Rotton to the Core, Hello from the Gutter, Thanx for Nothin', Word of Hurt, and Up to Zero to see what album you'd like to check out next. At the very least, those songs are good. Overkill is a great band, and I preordered the new album on vinyl for a reason. Tell me what you think.

Doom metal is a genre of metal music that's characterized by slow, heavy riffs and lyrics that are often nihilistic and full of despair. The music sounds crushing and oppressive. While I don't agree with the nihilistic outlook most doom metal bands display I think the music is very therapeutic when I feel like shit.

My favorite doom metal band has to be Electric Wizard. They're a well-known band within the genre and their lyrics focus on horror films and occultism. Their album Dopethrone is considered a genre landmark and it's probably the thickest, loudest doom metal I've ever heard. The album was recorded in three days while all members of the band were engaging in heavy drug use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=785873fz_y8 [Play]

Their album Time To Die is also very good. It sounds even more misanthropic and miserable than Dopethrone. One of their best songs, I Am Nothing, can be found on this album. It's incredibly heavy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubBPXQ5U2_0 [Play]

Not all of their songs are slow and sludgy. My favorite song of theirs, Dunwich, sounds quite different. It's very groovy and upbeat. I love the lyrics in this song and how the riffs match with Jus Oborn's vocals. It sounds like a medieval horror movie.

Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame is a 2001 album by epic black metal band Summoning. The album is heavily inspired by Tolkien's works and features a lot of audio samples from radio productions of Lord of the Rings. A lot of the lyrics are actually straight from his books.
It's one of the best black metal albums I've ever heard. Really atmospheric and powerful. My favorite song off the album is Ashen Cold.

Haha, awesome! I think their old stuff is really good. In my opinion their newer material sounds a little stale. I think Summoning really nails that blend of high fantasy sound mixed with metal music. I've yet to find another band that does it as well as Summoning. Another favorite track of mine by them is Nightshade Forests off the Dol Guldur EP.

Understandable. It's more epic than heavy. The post about doom metal higher up in the thread might be more up your alley.

Gamma Ray's Sigh No More is an underrated album I listened to this week and was impressed. The original album art is material for that bad album art thread, but the remaster's art is way better. I can't say any of the songs were less than a 3.5/5, but there is something different about this album. In a strange coincidence, Sigh No More resembles Kai's former band's album Pink Bubbles go Ape from that same year. The album is all over the place and is a more hard rock record than a speed/power metal record. I tend to like the more conventual style tracks such as One With the World, Start Running, and Dream Healer. There is good playing and great vocals from Ralf as well, so I would recommend this.

How do you feel about Metallica's new album? The fact that people give Metallica a pass for all their weak material is confusing to me. Tallica's new single isn't that great and their fans act as if the band is the greatest thing since sliced bread. I have no motivation to check out the new album.

Opeth has always been a band that I have struggled to love, and after this recent listen, I don't know if I ever will. Even with their good two songs, they spend way too much time on each song and exhaust the listener. Harvest could have been better if they shaved off two minutes because it would have been more concise.

I've been listening to Powerwolf a lot lately. At first I was skeptical because of their Christian spiritual songs mixed with European/German folklore and mysticism, but I learned they do not consider themselves a religious band. As far as I'm concerned, Powerwolf is like Sabaton if the vocals weren't so bad. As far as Power Metal goes, they are middle-tier, but you can still enjoy them. Powerwolf doesn't have any stand-out classics, but I enjoy Sacrament of Sin is their best album in my opinion, and Fist By Fist is my favorite song from them. Powerwolf is pretty good band that appeals to casual metal fans for some reason.

This a project I'd like to recommend to people who like Arch/Matheos. The band takes the soaring vocals of the early Fates Warning records with the proggy elements of later Fates Warning. The soaring vocals go a long way for me because I love those types of vocals in metal. Hearing those elements that you will pick up on later listens is always great two. If I would have to recommend an album from them I would recommend their latest "Winter Ethereal."

Are there any new metal bands 22chan likes? When I say new I mean their first album was released in 2019/2020 or later. One band I would like to share is the band named the Lightbringer of Sweden. They have two albums and they are both quality releases. Their sound is traditional metal with a sense of melody. The cherry on top is their very good vocalist. If you want to check them out start from the beginning there are only two albums.
