I've had that happen. I wouldn't say it was scary, so much as surreal. I was playing a multiplayer game when it started lagging heavily. For context, it was a 2D topdown roguelite fantasy game, which often had connectivity issues for some reason; however this time it was worse than usual. What happened was that all the enemy sprites stopped moving. I could still run around, and even hit them. The sprites would take damage, turn red, but never die. Once in a while the game would update, some enemies would disappear, others teleport and freeze again. I would not take damage. You'd think think this would just suck, but instead I suddenly felt like I was playing a ...different kind of game. Maybe it was because I could still control my character fully with no delays, and I would never even teleport around. It probably sounds dumb, but it felt very surreal walking casually in the middle of hordes of still enemies. And then, all of a sudden, I died; probably from all the damage I had unknowingly taken that was delayed due to the lags.

Anyone know why The Gravemind from Halo 2 said "I am a monument to all your sins"?
I know the answer, but i'm curious as to if anyone else heard as to why, before i continue further.

In a halo 2 storyboard, the arbiter discovers a forerunner coffin. He opens it up, and inside is a skeleton of a regular human being.
Halo legends is a canon anthology series, and in one episode, a sort of prelude to Halo 3 ODST. In this episode, on a far away planet, ruins where discovered. It's freaking scientists out because thd ruins had distinct Indian, Japanese, and Greco-Roman aesthetic elements, (and many more) which asks the question, who the fuck made it?
It was implied this would be one of many keys planted that would lead to more halo media and a great secret being unlocked, that is before bungie left and 343 industries fucked everything up.
In short, in our very own timeline, after endless wars humanity fled to the stars, unlocking the secrets of the human body via the super soldier program, humanity both evolved naturally, and genetically engineered themselves to adapt to whatever planets they found, becoming aliens you see in game. Eventually one of them ascended, becoming god itself. (the great sin) Something happened along the way to piss it off, so it became the flood to wipe away it's mistake. The forerunners captured all species DNA to recreate everything incase something happened, and it did, leading to the halo array to wipe all traces of the flood from the galaxy. This is an endless cycle happening over and over, leading to the halo games.

Why was the flood obsessed with finding earth? To finally end the cycle once and for all.
Why does the covenant have catholic flavorings to their behaviour and relgion? Because they carry the memories of humanity in a fucked up way, a dark reflection. If they where aliens, why wouldn't they be more.... Alien?

This is interesting to entertain, and the ways it potentially connects to Marathon are very cool. Unfortunately I'm not very well versed in Marathon's lore or depth so I have little to offer in that department, although I think it's a worthy direction to consider!
