The series has been out for ages, and it's lore, has a couple interesting twists and implications to say the least. This thread is for disscussing the games, the lore and really any related media (that is canon) as so long as it isn't trash.
For those who might be curious, the chronological order of games goes like this:
Drakengard 3
Introduces some newer concepts and important characters while explaining and giving the origins to various concepts mentioned in drakengard.
Story? Set in the early days of midgard, (an alternate version of earth) A whore gets infected with a cosmic horror flower that dooms humanity, but gives her powers beyond comprehension.
Drakengard
This is the actual start of the shared universe for these games, Set up more important concepts that would be reused for nier, a seemingly diffrent game.
Takes place in the later years of midgard. A man makes a pact with a dragon to wipe out his enemies, and to save the world from a group of people who are intent on damaging magical seals that keep the world in balance.
Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139…
Takes place on our earth, after ending E of drakengard, a parody of evangelion, (and ace combat) an ending originally created as a joke. A young boy must find a cure for his sisters disease, and must rid the world of shades, sinister monsters taking the shape of humans.
Nier Automata
Set on earth, ages after the event of nier. Humanity has fled to the moon after space aliens envaded earth, attacking them with horrific, mindless machines. In place of human soldiers, an android army fights for the future of humanity.

I haven't played drakengard 3 and 1. I watched terrible playthroughs that skipped many things, and i did bunch of research to find some that are fuller to say the least. I will be watching them soon.
What i will say about drakengard is that the actual cut scenes are fucking good, meanwhile this is the gameplay
https://youtube.com/watch?v=CHnAqxAE7fQ [Play]
It's important to highlight this. The actual flight based combat was conceived first and was fully developed (and based after ace combat of all things) meanwhile the land based combat was thrown in at the last second. As anyone can understand, the main problem is that the ground based gameplay is a rip off of dynasty warriors 2, which is in general a shit franchise. Granted, drakengard was intended to parody and piss on dynasty warriors, it's still a direct rip off and therefore, might not be fun to actually play. (take my words as a grain of salt because i haven't played the games besides only a tiny bit of nier and automata)
The actual story and cutscenes are well produced, one scene that wowed me was when a bard sat down to play a tune, the music was nice. It was a sobering moment. The characters where insane to say the least, the producers caught their square enix bosses at a bad time so they kinda just said "do whatever you want lol" so.. they just did. (the bosses later came back and begged tem to mae changes to the story to make it more marketable but the producers ignored them lol) You have a pedophile, a psychopath, a cannibal, a woman with an incestious complex, and a narcissistic old man as main characters, all of whom are written with realistic emotions amd consequences instead of anime tropes, top notch shit. I like how they potrayed caim, it was a commentary on videogame protagonists who kill thousands of niggers with glee and without any care, and who is also silent due to a personal sacrifice, but also because main characters in video games are also silent.
Something to mention about 3 is, while the gameplay is widely developed and refined, the tone is... jarring to say the least, considering the writing of drakengard. It can be best discribed as juvenile and not in a way that makes sense to the early and later games, or is even funny for the most part. The humor also drips with irony and meta humor at the expense of the player. There are plenty of shitty 4th wall breaks for some reason. Then the graphics are... diffrent then what was given in the first drakengard. Things are designed wildly diffrent, which makes you wonder what the hell changed between drakengard one and 3, like why are the golems diffrent? why are the angels less like the watchers from the first game dispite being the same creatures? why is everything more colorful? and then you have the problem of copy pasted bosses thrown out there to artifically extend the length of the game.
I'll change my focus on nier, and automata later.

They never explained how adam was formed in the first place, I mean if he was created once, then therefore the machines could form another, and ascend and make better machines then the shitty short stubby, then they could have actually wiped all androids out. Hell, it would have been nutty if you where fighting a bunch of short stubbies and they merged into more biblically named fuckers. Hell what's interesting is it's implied those guys are actually biological machines, meaning they are more organic then the androids who themselves have biological components. Why not reuse this? Where the writers lazy, because it seems pretty fucking significant of a happening and no one both in game or irl are treating it seriously. Hell, you could have had the red girls freaking out over their creations and maybe adam or eve could have killed their creators, starting another cycle.
I made the mistake of reading ahead by looking at novels, manga and shit but i haven't really made it too far in game so i don't know if they'll bother with it, but god damn.

So androids can eat, and then excrete waste matter, they can cry, especially when sad or scared. They have stomaches, a heart like humans, skin, lungs, they can sweat, they can taste, they have red blood. They have hair that grows, they don't have genitalia, and for whatever reason they can be implanted with human memories, sometimes even the memories their original models where based after. I forgot to mention that combat androids are also installed with a pleasure-generating algorithm that releases chemicals into their circuits during battle, (there's even a quest where a character makes fucking robot meth to replecate the high lol) it gives a type of nearly sexual release, although i must also point out that they cannot feel romantic feelings, instead the closest thing they can feel is familial bonding and units tend to see eachother like brothers, and sisters, and so on instead of romantic partners. Dispite taro wanting otherwise there is no gay robots.
It's interesting to me, because i'm personally wondering how far the extent of their "robotic" nature is really robotic, like what if they are fucked up humans but with electronics installed?

In the west we had one game, called Nier. In japan, they had two games, Nier Replicant, and Nier Gestalt.
Nier Gestalt is what was given to us in the west, with the blanket title of "Nier". It was altered because Square Enix thought the west wouldn't like a younger protagonist. It stars an older protagonist, all the dialog was altered to fit this role. In japan, replicant stars a younger protagonist.
The story flow is the same, but dialoge differs to the point where it can be said that it kind of is a diffrent game. Both original nier and replicant has gameplay kind of derivative of god of war. Later, there was a remaster, and upgraded version titled Nier Replicant ver.1.22474487139… that adds cut content only featured in novels and world guides, and the gameplay was altered from the clunky god of war, to the smoother nier automata gameplay. This is supposed to be the "full" version of the game.
Which is canon? For whatever reason, both are mentioned as canon but for the most part nier replicant is the one that has the highest favor.

The story, and characters and so on of automata, is a good one but it doesn"t feel fully fleshed out or developed. Or atleast maybe the translation for the english dub might be poor because it feels empty, if not slightly confusing. One example is emotions. We're led to believe that androids, atleast the yorha units are not supposed to feel emotions and yet even early in the game, even if it's denied by characters, do act quite emotional, as an example you'll get moments like when an operatior, is crying about how she was rejected by another operator, and 2b has to comfort her. This is kind of explained away by the commander being way to liberal for her own good out of guilt, (in a conspiratorial manner because she's guilty of something) and that the "androids must be emotionless" stems from the pearl harbor decent accident, because emotions fucked everything up,
and is personally enacted by 2b so she doesn't have to feel guilty about being a secret assassin. But i don't really know to be honest, maybe i'm the idiot but i'm way too confused.
