In this thread, I want to hear about YOUR experiences with irony poisoning that has been plaguing the modern internet for more than the past decade or so.

Whether you are:
- Someone who actively participates,
- Someone who reluctantly goes along,
- Someone critical of it,
- Or someone who has been personally affected by it.

What is irony poisoning?
Irony poisoning is what happens when people use so much sarcasm, jokes, and meta humor that they can't express real thoughts or feelings without fear of being mocked. Over time, they start to self-sabotage any attempt at sincerity because they’re afraid of looking weak or out of place.
Irony poisoning creates toxic environments where anyone who tries to be genuine gets attacked, mocked, or pushed out. This constant layer of irony makes it hard for people to trust anything, leading to confusion, loneliness, and sometimes even real-life harm.
it can show up anywhere, including in extreme social and political movements. It's often used to manipulate people because constant joking and detachment makes it easier to push extreme ideas without being questioned.
While it's important to think before speaking and not share every random thought online, the way irony is overused today has created a dangerous culture where sincerity is almost impossible.

Why /www/ and not /yu/?
Because irony poisoning is not just a personal experience but a major cultural force that has reshaped internet communities and online behavior over the last decade. It is a part of internet history now, not just individual struggles.

Ways to cure irony poisoning:
- Avoid Reddit, ResetEra, Tumblr, Twitter, BlueSky, or any online platform that has a userbase that are prone and vulnerable to radical sociopolitical brainrot.
- Stop consuming media made in the 2010s or newer and instead read, watch, and listen to older media (mid 2000s and older).
-- Another hint: if the movie, game, TV show, book, or audio drama is written by millenial manchildren or younger, stop immediately and consume something else.
--- If the writing is steeped in "self-aware", meta-level ironic jokes, it is not good for you if you're poisoned in irony.
- Take a prolonged break from the internet
- Start hanging out with either older people (who are not creepy, extremely lonely freaks), or people who are not internet-addicted or are capable of showing sincere, neutral feelings.

I recently watched this video and thought it explained the effects of irony poisoning really well:
https://youtu.be/DuTwM6jB9JY?t=91 [Play]
>My brain had been so molded over time by so much postmodern wink-wink nudge-nudge storytelling that it could just not recognize sincerity. (around 3:08)
>When I was eventually met with sincerity from a major studio blockbuster, I thought this must be some sort of trick. I'm not going to offer up my heart to this trilogy because... well, I've been hurt so many times in the past. (around 10:14–10:26)
>When every film feels the need to shy away from earnest emotions or genuine stakes, a lot of problems tend to arise, problems which films with a more sincere approach would just never run into. (around 4:29–4:39)
>A movie acknowledging that it's a movie is usually referred to as breaking the fourth wall, yet I would argue that a better term would be strengthening the fourth wall. The more frequently this wall is acknowledged, the more sturdy and opaque the barrier between audience and film becomes. (around 9:32–9:42)
>The more we come to expect this ironic style of storytelling, the less we are going to want to emotionally invest in films in the first place, because what's the point if every movie is just going to make fun of itself, and make fun of you for ever thinking that it might take something seriously? (around 9:47–9:56)

This board for Internet Culture and History. Threads and topics on this board should pertain to discussing various forms of internet culture, including but not limited to: celebrating, documenting, reporting, or sharing the history of internet culture, communities, and user generated content (UGC) across the internet.

What sort of topics should be discussed?
Videos, music, blogs, animations, video games (ex. games using Flash, Shockwave, or HTML5; downloadable desktop games), general media, forums, and other topics such as legacy communities that fit into the general description of "Internet Culture and History" are suitable. However, these should all be tied to a proper thread rather than randomly posted without a broader context. While there is no concrete format that absolutely must be followed, please refrain from making generic posts without the broader purpose of this board in mind.
Random uploads unrelated to the general topic always have a home on /b/.

What are some examples of historical UGC hosting sites / communities?
Sites such as Nico Nico Douga, YouTube, Newgrounds, 2ch, 4chan, YTMND, and more, are examples of websites that have hosted user generated content of historical merit. There is a great deal of internet culture and history that has been formed from sites such as these. Likewise, they each hosted unique communities that became distinctive enough to have their own sense of culture and identity.

Flash content
General SWF content made in Flash can be hosted on /f/. However, posts pertaining to the discussion of this sort of content are highly encouraged on /www/, due to their overall relevance and impact within the broader context of internet culture and history.

Resources:
https://archive.org/ & https://archive.is - Wayback Machine & Internet Archive, snapshots for most, but not all notable websites (mainly due to legal reasons)
https://theoldnet.com/ - Aggregator to view historic snapshots of notable websites, historic and concurrent
https://www.webdesignmuseum.org/ - Museum website to view historic snapshots of internet history
https://knowyourmeme.com/ - (Not Recommended) Platform used to document the many internet phenomenons. Like Wikipedia, many articles having questionable citations and documentation, it is not recommended to take at face value; explore the sources cited and go deeper to further your knowledge.

Let us post/discuss more older and underrated Vocaloid videos by lesser known artists.
I made this thread in the hopes of getting actual interesting discussion going about the videos that are going to be posted in this thread so please don't just post a bunch of links and then fuck off.
When you post a video please elaborate in any way you can about that video whether it is describing the feeling you get when listening to it, talking about the artist and his other works, or posting any additional interesting details about that video.
Many of these videos do not have a translation so providing additional context to make the viewer understand what it is about would be appreciated,
or if you want you can subtitle the video yourself using a tool like https://github.com/Aegisub/Aegisub and translators like https://www.deepl.com/translator or https://openai.com/blog/whisper/
VIPPALOIDS are also welcome.

Your favorite thread from /pol/ before it was shut down returns. I'm going to be making as many translations as possible and posting the ones from the previous thread in here. You can also contribute by posting what you like found on the 政歴M@D tag on Nico Nico Douga: https://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/政歴M%40D or request a translation to be made. I will mention that not everything is found on the 政歴M@D tag regarding Political History M@D sometimes it helps translating a historical event or person into Japanese and then putting it into Nico Nico Douga search next to the "MAD" tag.

The video I am starting off with is not exactly a translation as there was nothing to translate apart from the original Nichijou lyrics so I made a bunch of tweaks to it.
The original video is: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15599763 [Play] made by B@oimo who has a few other videos like this that are worth looking into. I remember he made that sleepy Joseph Stalin Santa video as well.

There's barely if not any English discussion about Nico Nico Douga left on the internet so I thought I'd make this thread to let people share any interesting medleys found on the Nico Nico Medley Series tag https://www.nicovideo.jp/tag/ニコニコメドレーシリーズ
Discuss basically anything about the medleys you're going to share whether it's a just a single part that evicts emotions or memories inside of you or any additional information that the average person wouldn't know about the medley and its author.
No overseas medleys, and make sure to check if there's maybe an entry for the medley at medley.bepis.io before posting since that provides quite a lot information.

If you used to frequently browse the internet back then it would be hard to not have heard at least one of these three nico nico douga medleys which are also called The Big Three:

Kumikyoku (Super Suite): https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm500873 [Play]
Ryuuseigun (Meteor Shower): https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm2959233 [Play]
Nanairo (Rainbow/7 Colors of): https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm7233711 [Play]
All of them using popular songs at the time on Nico Nico Douga they were all produced by Shimo and are usually referred to as the medleys that defined the early days of Nico Nico Douga with Kumikyoku being the 2nd offical entry in the tag that created thousands upon thousands of medleys inspired by it and "I tried to sing" videos and more.

You can refer to these articles for more information about the medleys which also include a song list.

Shimo produced quite a lot of medleys and I think my favorite of his must the Danjiri Matsuri 2009 medley that he produced: https://files.catbox.moe/mz3i1t.mp3 [Play]

Take a deep dive with me and find some hidden treasure. No context is necessary, and there are many ways to explore these boards: https://www.2chan.net/ https://2ch.sc/ https://5ch.net/ https://prev.strangeworld.icu/ You can post screenshots of threads/posts and repost whatever content you find. You can use google translate, deeply and I heard some browsers automatically translate text. There are probably more options out there.

[Nostalgic] Early IM@S (Idolm@ster) MADs Anonymous Thu 24/04/2025 6:30:21 AM 18 days ago MER No. 97
I've decided to revive this thread after going through all my mylists on Nico Nico Douga and revisiting a collection of Idolm@ster MADs I had saved a long time ago. If my memory serves me right, the previous thread didn't last long due to the site's shutdown and a lack of unique responses due to me not really explaining what these are supposed to be.

Idolm@ster was originally an arcade game by Bandai Namco. In the game, you play as a producer, and your job is to nurture your very own idol. It was later released on Xbox (the first game) and PlayStation (the second game, this one is shit).
in 2007 when people initially uploaded their gameplay videos to NND of IM@S on the Xbox and arcade it got incredibly popular and a kind of MAD craze happened around that time and by February 10, 2010 it crossed the 100,000 video mark.
If you don't know MAD/M@D refers to the editing of videos and audio to give them new meanings. This work involves creators using their imagination to transform original works into new creations, differentiating them from straightforward plagiarism. There are many types of different MADs and a video is usually tagged with what kind of MAD it is supposed to be (like Sound MAD, Game MAD, Movie MAD, etc.)
For further information I will recommend you check out these:
https://www.nicovideo.jp/search/アイドルマスター%20MAD
https://idolmaster.tdiary.net/20000102.html (What is IM@S MAD? and a list of popular IM@S MAD videos)
https://metagold.hatenadiary.org/entry/20080513/1210650303 (From a early source if you want more information on Nico Nico Douga in English)
http://kaniblog-eng.blog.jp/archives/1066580690.html#more (Another interesting blog post from early NND user Kanipan which is worth reading)

Since we are approaching Halloween I am going to start off this thread with my most favorite IM@S MAD video which is originally the opening to the anime called Hakaba Kitaro (Graveyard Kitaro), and so what I found really interesting about this opening is that it shows a bunch of clever used colorized cut outs of the original Hakaba Kitaro manga's first chapter which was actually the series that served as a inspiration for the popular horror stories manga and anime series called Gegege no Kintaro.
There is a TV size and full version for this MAD, and I love how for the full he went the extra step to draw bits that were not actually included in the original opening.

Lord of the Rings MAD... (;° w °)Wait what!? Anonymous Thu 24/04/2025 6:30:10 AM 18 days ago MER No. 88
You probably didn't think someone would pull this number, did you...
A not so serious thread about the small amount of MADs available on Nico Nico Douga about LOTR, and If it does get stale and I run out of videos I might just use this thread to post MADs of some other western movies available on NND.
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15471114 [Play]
So a bit of history behind the first video. The MMD creator kiyoP discovered the video by Moymoy Palaboy mimicking BACKSTREET BOYS Everybody (Backstreet's Back) MV with facial expressions and decided to create a MMD animation for the 7th MMD CUP out of it and actually released the animation files to be used by other users.
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15356644 [Play] I thought about going for humor, but it strangely became more manly. I might have made it a bit shorter because I lacked the energy and time.
It's specialized for models, so adjusting might be a bit troublesome, but if you still want to use it, please go ahead.

The funny thing with this LOTR MMD is that this video was just made a week and half after he released the animation files and submitted it for the same competition I guess...
https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4186563 [Play]
The second video with Boromir is another awesome entry into the アッーウッウッイネイネ(0゚・∀・)tag which can be translated as "Aaa-uu-uu, i-ne i-ne" which is basically a misheard phrase found in the song Under My Skin: https://youtu.be/p8MKEPE_QMk?t=102 [Play] and you probably know it as Paffendorf where Momoko Kuzuryuu from "Sumomomo Momomo" dances in sync with the song.
https://dic.nicovideo.jp/a/アッーウッウッイネイネ%280゚・∀・%29
I was the first to attach this emoticon 「+(0゚・∀・)++」 to アッーウッウッイネイネ. The base of this emoticon is '+(0゚・∀・) + ワクテカ +' (In this context ワクテカ = wakuwaku tekateka = exciting, shiny) and I wanted to express the twinkling of the character's eyes with '++' and the shiny overall picture with ”0゚”. However, at some point '++' was removed and it became just (0゚・∀・)
