Japanese Anime Sound/MADs CAT Thu 24/04/2025 6:32:08 AM 2 months ago MER No. 181 +
A thread about posting and discussing Anime Sound/MADs.
Feel free to share what you like about a particular Anime MAD or the Anime it's about, also, if you have any referenced parts that might seem mysterious to you use the provided tags/comments on a video to find more about it, or feel free to ask here.
Q. How do I search for Anime MADs on Nico Nico Douga?
A. Refer to the video posted in this thread: >>>/b/1833
Also particularly regarding Anime MADs, many studios have the ability to take down any video containing even a small clip of their anime on Nico Nico Douga, but many of them choose not to do so because they recognize that Anime MADs, from an analytical standpoint, have actually helped them achieve many more sales than they could have otherwise which was especially relevant back then. Of course, there are a few instances like the Anime Rurouni Kenshin (KYM) where Fuji TV will seize any opportunity to remove any type of video featuring their anime, even if it's just a small clip. So, the workaround for that was to collaborate and completely re-animate parts of the series that were frequently used in MAD videos, so Fuji TV couldn't claim it as their property.

Please try to refrain from posting anything created by overseas individuals and any YTPMV Cover-styled MADs; you can usually identify those using tags like 「原曲不使用」 (Original Song Not Used: that recreate the entire BGM with a bunch of fake instrumentally sounding samples).
You do not need to translate a MAD in order to post it here, although I bet it would be greatly appreciated by anyone browsing the thread, and often you can find the lyrics online. If you do decide to do it, here are a few tools you could probably use:
Subtitle Software: https://github.com/Ristellise/AegisubDC or https://github.com/arch1t3cht/Aegisub
Translation: Deepl.com, Rikai-kun(Chrome Extension)/Rikai-tan(Firefox Extension) and ChatGPT.
OCR Software: https://github.com/kha-white/manga-ocr (pip install and then run with powershell or cmd using a command like "./manga_ocr" in conjunction with the capture function found in something like ShareX: https://getsharex.com/)

I spent some time picking out these for the thread:
Fashion Foreman [Pocky & Pepero Day] https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm16135975 [Play] (Video 1) Kaiji & Akagi x ORANGE RANGE Oshare Banchou
Today I'm going to say it forcefully Ehttps://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm7729693 [Play] (Video 2) Minami-ke Okaeri (first few episodes) x Otome yo Taishi o Idake!! のワの
An Unusually High-Tension 'Lucky☆Star' https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm1045437 [Play] (Video 3) Lucky☆Star x Hanasaka Tenshi Tenten-kun OP
【MAD】ARCHIVE LOVERS【lain】 https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm4827745 [Play] (Video 4) serial experiment lain x Ayane ARCHIVE LOVERS
[Nichijou × Kaiji] The Foreman Trying to Make the Kaiji Group Laugh https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm15472714 [Play] (Video 5) Kaiji S2 x Nichijou 31 Episode 8 at 3:00

About that Anime that the Lucky Star video is parodying it is completely unknown to foreigners. It's basically about some alien angel that came to earth to help a unlucky boy who then creates more accidents, and I'm unsure if you can even find any subtitles for the episodes anywhere. The opening song as you might have noticed is hinting at something dirty, and believe it or not it was aired at 6 PM slot on Sunday when kids were watching the show: https://w.atwiki.jp/aniwotawiki/pages/16297.html

It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that the entire song revolves around the chorus.
Clearly singing about a certain body part, right?
The most important issue is that "Hanasaka Tenshi Tenten-kun" aired on Saturday evenings at 6 o'clock.
As Shonen Jump has many child readers, Shueisha probably took that into account and scheduled the broadcast for the evening. However, the lyrics clearly pick a fight with the PTA.
Originally, this dirty joke-filled song...
originated when Tenten-kun, amidst classmates worrying about the other protagonist Hideyuki, suggested, "Let's sing together to cheer ourselves up."
His classmates immediately retorted, "Can we sing lyrics like these?" which left many readers bursting into laughter. It was a scene that no one would have imagined a few months later becoming the theme song of the anime adaptation.
During the broadcast, the Bla Bla Bla Boozes, who were performing the theme song on a variety show that handled Fuji TV anime, appeared in bizarre attire. (Even Shonen Jump's magazine commented, "Who are these guys?")
When the program's host, Koji Imada, asked, "You were clearly saying 'that,' right?" regarding the lyrics:
"I'm just talking about being stiff," was the reply.
During the chorus, even the female backup singers seem to take a step back from the microphone.
No matter how ambiguously expressed, it sounds nothing but obscene...
Moreover, this program aired during prime time.

NTA, but I assume he means the time they make you wait before posting if you don't provide an email. You have to wait 5 minutes after solving the captcha to make your first post, longer to make a thread. At least, that's how it was last I checked. I'm unsure whether this post would fit /meta/ or not so I'm doing it here.

This is the thread where people can post memories and stories of 22chan pre- Twoot Abandonment. Fun times, interesting interactions or major events should be catalogued here. We want any newfags to be able to find and read our history so perhaps the people that come after us won't lose sight of our roots as a community.
Anything 22chan related like images, comics, or memes of Niniba can also be posted and shared.

The story that comes to mind for me is when Spacechan and its offshoots died due to autism and then we got a bunch of refugees. There was that guy who posted those Richter pictures and a few other anons who asked if they would be allowed to take refuge in our community. I don't know if those same anons are around now or what happened to the rest of their community but it was a strange time. 22 nearly got pulled into some shit that nobody wanted to be a part of.

The Internet is Sick with Irony Poisoning CAT Sat 26/04/2025 9:25:40 AM 1 month ago MER No. 370 +

In this thread, I want to hear about YOUR experiences with irony poisoning that has been plaguing the modern internet for more than the past decade or so.

Whether you are:
- Someone who actively participates,
- Someone who reluctantly goes along,
- Someone critical of it,
- Or someone who has been personally affected by it.

What is irony poisoning?
Irony poisoning is what happens when people use so much sarcasm, jokes, and meta humor that they can't express real thoughts or feelings without fear of being mocked. Over time, they start to self-sabotage any attempt at sincerity because they’re afraid of looking weak or out of place.
Irony poisoning creates toxic environments where anyone who tries to be genuine gets attacked, mocked, or pushed out. This constant layer of irony makes it hard for people to trust anything, leading to confusion, loneliness, and sometimes even real-life harm.
it can show up anywhere, including in extreme social and political movements. It's often used to manipulate people because constant joking and detachment makes it easier to push extreme ideas without being questioned.
While it's important to think before speaking and not share every random thought online, the way irony is overused today has created a dangerous culture where sincerity is almost impossible.

Why /www/ and not /yu/?
Because irony poisoning is not just a personal experience but a major cultural force that has reshaped internet communities and online behavior over the last decade. It is a part of internet history now, not just individual struggles.

Ways to cure irony poisoning:
- Avoid Reddit, ResetEra, Tumblr, Twitter, BlueSky, or any online platform that has a userbase that are prone and vulnerable to radical sociopolitical brainrot.
- Stop consuming media made in the 2010s or newer and instead read, watch, and listen to older media (mid 2000s and older).
-- Another hint: if the movie, game, TV show, book, or audio drama is written by millenial manchildren or younger, stop immediately and consume something else.
--- If the writing is steeped in "self-aware", meta-level ironic jokes, it is not good for you if you're poisoned in irony.
- Take a prolonged break from the internet
- Start hanging out with either older people (who are not creepy, extremely lonely freaks), or people who are not internet-addicted or are capable of showing sincere, neutral feelings.

I recently watched this video and thought it explained the effects of irony poisoning really well:
https://youtu.be/DuTwM6jB9JY?t=91 [Play]
>My brain had been so molded over time by so much postmodern wink-wink nudge-nudge storytelling that it could just not recognize sincerity. (around 3:08)
>When I was eventually met with sincerity from a major studio blockbuster, I thought this must be some sort of trick. I'm not going to offer up my heart to this trilogy because... well, I've been hurt so many times in the past. (around 10:14–10:26)
>When every film feels the need to shy away from earnest emotions or genuine stakes, a lot of problems tend to arise, problems which films with a more sincere approach would just never run into. (around 4:29–4:39)
>A movie acknowledging that it's a movie is usually referred to as breaking the fourth wall, yet I would argue that a better term would be strengthening the fourth wall. The more frequently this wall is acknowledged, the more sturdy and opaque the barrier between audience and film becomes. (around 9:32–9:42)
>The more we come to expect this ironic style of storytelling, the less we are going to want to emotionally invest in films in the first place, because what's the point if every movie is just going to make fun of itself, and make fun of you for ever thinking that it might take something seriously? (around 9:47–9:56)

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins was a game that, at first, I thought was just utterly stupid after the first trailer. But as many people came to realize, it was actually 2000s PS2 style of earnest. That is not surprising when you consider the team of people from Square involved with the development, but it was all the same very much a good example of sincerity in this irony-poisoned world.

Beyond Jack and his game, I find that this irony-poisoning is particularly bad in the West, but in the East you saw it as comic-relief instead, where in a serious work such as Trigun or Rurouni Kenshi, the characters would become deformed and have some sort of very animated explosion of emotion for comedic effect. It's still present today, usually some perverted accidental instance of someone touching a boob or the like.

This sort of comedic crutch is actually my biggest issue with Berserk's use of Puck the fairy, as I feel he is at this point far too comical in a way that completely clashes with everything else.

Bringing it back to Square Enix, FFXIV suffers tremendously from attempts at counter-balancing the serious with the silly, most of all in Endwalker where a world ending threat gets juxtaposed with the silly little rabbit people and their oh so "adorable" antics that completely break the pacing of an emotionally heavy situation. It seems authors are just afraid of letting anyone actually feel sad for more than 10 minutes.

The difference between Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy, and most of the media we have made here recently, is that both Team Ninja and Square Enix made a concerted effort to keep the game sincere in its ironic, meta themes in relation to the first Final Fantasy. There was a punch, dedication, and attitude that other post-ironic media here in the west lack.
It's like when you confess to a girl in high school, and then you say half-way or close to the end of the conversation, "JUST KIDDING". That's how I feel when it comes to most western media made now.

It's odd that you mention all of these sites but not 4chan and other imageboards, which can be regarded as the spearheading pioneers of such behavior due to how their format promotes separating one's self from their message. 4chan's social dynamics in particular actively encourages being as in inflammatory and outrageous in one's comments as possible in order to get attention, then repeating said comments over and over again until it becomes stale and you go to the next ones. Do you really believe people posting "Is coffee good for you?" are being sincere and vulnerable compared to the karma farming your find on Reddit?

This dynamic is so apparent that I often find myself confused when people claim 4chan users are more "honest". Just because you're rude and blunt doesn't mean you're telling the truth.

I think too, most people are like, reading ED or knowyourmeme and then they think: "So this is how i'm supposed to behave here?" You see it too with imageboards that adopt a "nostalga facade" where they adopt old 4chan lingo and assume it wasn't as bad back then because they read an article on Yotsuba Society. But they didn't realise the guy who made yotsuba society, Jkid was doing the typical Namefag shit where he was trying to be a super cool internet personality and fetishise the old internet without realising all the actual damage he was doing.
I understand the nature of anonymous posting means there aren't any rules, i can go and make a post on 22Chan right now that doesn't break the rules, but nudges at some grey area and pisses everyone off, but should i really? I might get a quick dopamine hit but what of substance am i gaining in the long run?

I think the major problem is that, if you were to lurk 4chan now, especially boards like /g/, /v/, and sometimes /a/ (during summer), you would have a very difficult time to discern between the platforms listed in the OP and current 4chan. Now, if you were talking about old 4chan, yes, it can be debated they were the catalyst, but the major highlights of old 4chan were often goofy and did not take itself too seriously as a major sphere of influence.

Tsundere! Kugimiya Disease. CAT Fri 25/04/2025 11:56:49 AM 2 months ago MER No. 360 +
You may discuss anything tsundere related in this thread, but the main focus is on Kugimiya Disease, the term for the obsession with tsundere characters voiced by Rie Kugimiya (釘宮理恵).

Q. What is Kugimiya Disease?
A. It’s an ailment in which you become so captivated by the voice actress Rie Kugimiya that you can’t get anything else done -> (Hyper-Sensitive Cerebral Cortex Inflammation Caused by the Kugimiya Virus.)

The three most common infection routes are the: S-Strain, L-Strain, N-Strain
Other confirmed variants include the T-Strain, Y-Strain, I-Strain, and more. Among girls, an A-Strain outbreak is also possible.

If you’re not sure which letter stands for what here's a list of the Kugimiya Disease Strains:
R -> Rizel https://myanimelist.net/character/5255/Rizel_Iwaki
S -> Shana https://myanimelist.net/character/1426/Shana
L -> Louise https://myanimelist.net/character/136/Louise_Fran%C3%A7oise_Le_Blanc_de_La_Valli%C3%A8re
N -> Nagi https://myanimelist.net/character/2078/Nagi_Sanzenin
T -> Taiga https://myanimelist.net/character/12064/Taiga_Aisaka
Y -> Yuuki Kataoka https://myanimelist.net/character/17276/Yuuki_Kataoka
A -> Alphonse https://myanimelist.net/character/12/Alphonse_Elric
I -> Iori Minase https://project-imas.wiki/Iori_Minase
K -> Kagura https://myanimelist.net/character/674/Kagura ← often used as a vaccine
NT -> Nena Trinity https://myanimelist.net/character/8063/Nena_Trinity
RZ -> Rose https://myanimelist.net/character/35736/Rose/featured
AR -> Astarotte https://myanimelist.net/character/27972/Astarotte_Ygvar
HA -> Aria H. Kanzaki https://myanimelist.net/character/30046/Aria_Holmes_Kanzaki
RS -> Rise Kujikawa https://myanimelist.net/character/16251/Rise_Kujikawa
HK -> Kurumi Hazuki https://myanimelist.net/character/44559/Kurumi_Hazuki
M -> Marta Lualdi https://aselia.fandom.com/wiki/Marta_Lualdi
MA -> Aguri Madoka https://myanimelist.net/character/87541/Aguri_Madoka
SY -> Yukimura Sanada https://myanimelist.net/character/31993/Yukimura_Sanada
F -> Fenrys https://myanimelist.net/character/199586/Fenrys ← new as of Apr 2024
(Let's try and refer to the character by their strain in this thread.)

Clinical Stages (There are five levels, 1-3 are early symptoms, and once you hit level 5 it’s hopeless.)
Level 1 - You develop a taste for traits like “loli” or “tsundere.” “There are so many!”
Level 2 - You start listening to Kugimiya’s voice more and more.
Level 3 - You can’t fall asleep without hearing her voice.
Level 4 (Middle Stage) - You’re restless unless her voice is playing all the time, or you slip into mental distress. For I-Strain patients, you can no longer tell her apart from Yukari Tamura (https://myanimelist.net/people/27/Yukari_Tamura) Going cold-turkey fails because your brain supplies its own hallucinated “voice in my head.”
Level 5 (Terminal) - You can only scream “Kugyuuuuuu!”

Treatment?
A commonly used vaccine is the K-Strain which is cheap and easy to obtain. It works up to level 3 of the clinical stages but mis-dosing can blast the patient straight up to level 5 so always consult a professional.
There is said to be an M-Strain vaccine that cures all strains. It comes from one of Kugimiya’s very first shows and is called both the “origin” and the “ultimate weapon” -> メンタマル星人 (Mentamaru alien) https://myanimelist.net/anime/4375/Kyoro-chan (She looks like a little girl with a grumpy middle-aged man’s face, but speaks in a cute voice: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm19112957 [Play]) Handle with care: the M-Strain can shatter your mental image of her, and in some cases makes the disease worse. So follow the (non-existent) instructions as no one knows the safe limit!

Notes:
The S, L, and N-strains are the most virulent. In particular, the N-Strain exploded thanks to its broadcast in the infamous 34 o-clock TV slot, so its symptoms are mild but patient numbers are huge.
The A-Strain is more common in female fans but it can also awaken certain male sufferers to a fondness for shotacon, so don’t take it lightly.
Gundam Otakus often pick up the NT-Strain.
If you stay near a 女王感染者 (queen carrier -> Someone that is totally consumed by Rie Kugimiya’s voice.) even your stomach may growl くぎゅぅぅぅぅ!

Nico Nico Douga Keyboard Crusher (KBC) Anonymous Thu 24/04/2025 6:29:28 AM 2 months ago MER No. 66 +
Presenting to you one of the most legendary source materials on Nico Nico Douga... You know him as the Unreal Gamer, Angry German Kid (AGK), or Der Echte Gangster but in Japan he was known under the alias Keyboard Crusher (KBC, shorted to Crusher sometimes) Kibokura, Kikura, and German-made VOCALOID.

This thread will evolve around sharing, translating, and discussing KBC videos, and any other stuff relating to KBC from Nico Nico Douga.

The oldest surviving video ever uploaded of him to Nico Nico Douga which was a very early time on there when Nico Nico Douga initially enabled uploading videos to the website: https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm167 [Play] in which basically everything that he said in his very aggressive German voice was misheard as something completely else in Japanese which was a factor in spawning tons of MADs, specifically otoMADs (Sound MAD(Movie Animation Douga(Video)s), around this guy which was partly responsible for pretty much leading the MAD space on Nico Nico Douga forward. He was especially popular for how his keyboard smashing sounds were remixed in videos.
I have included a full translation of those misheard quotes + Romaji subtitles in the initial video but do note that a lot of the mishearings are left up to interpretation and can be misheard as something completely else by other users (some of them are my interpretations).
Translation note: If you are wondering about what m9(^Д^)プギャー is supposed to be think of it as a Kaomoj of a index finger being pointed at you. it can also be written as 「m9っ」 or 「m9つ」 where 「つ」 signifies extending the thumb. Pugyah signifies mockery which evolved possibly from 「ぷぷぷ」 (pupupu). The full Kaomoj basically came to fruition when the 2channel's News Flash VIP was established in 2004.
I have no clue what the misheard phrase "Is created Hoimafu, Rose?" is supposed to mean but it's supposed to be super popular so If you have any idea I would appreciate it.

Believe it or not but the first ever otoMAD ever uploaded to Nico Nico Douga was a KBC video: https://nicovideo.jp/watch/sm662 [Play] though if you wondering what the first ever otoMAD that was created was it was Ogino House back in 2004: https://youtu.be/-FcLjBE0wZY [Play]
A lot of the KBC MADs usually come in different styles like using subtitles that aren't part of the misheard version or creating story based videos where KBC plays some kind of game and usually the story based ones often conclude with bad endings, such as the computer freezing or Crusher losing the game.
There are also videos where they reverse the footage to create even more potential mishearings a few popular ones being "EIRIN EIRIN" and "Haruhi" https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm23692618 [Play] and yes those are also used in otoMADs.
I will include in this post a few popular otoMADs from KBC that you might have even come across if you browsed Youtube back a decade and a half ago.

https://www.nicovideo.jp/watch/sm13098915 [Play] The Supreme Keyboard Destruction Collaboration [His Majesty the Emperor Banzai Festival '10]
Song List: https://medley.bepis.io/wiki/Keyboard_Ketsu_Kaisen
I've been working on this for the past several days now, and this is probably the first time someone has ever translated a full otoMAD collaboration into English. So basically, if you didn't know, otoMAD collaborations tend to happen when there is usually some kind of event to celebrate, like someone in the source material having their birthday, or you know, it's the end of the year, which is more common. In those collaborations, the Japanese creators all get together months before it's supposed to be released in some group chat or through email and pick a medley, then get parts assigned to them that they will create for that medley. However, a lot of the time, it might be that there is a medley creator, and that collaboration will have its full-fledged Nico Nico Douga medley made. (Good collaborations, like this, are a thing of the past now).

There's a few translation notes so I want to get to that:
1. A lot of the translations here are basically just Danmaku comments so you might notice that when KBC says something twice but it is interpreted differently each time it's just something the viewers misheard it as and thought it would fit better than the original.
2. The [Shakugan no Shana II OP] (5:20), [GONG](06:00), and [Sing & Smile] (9:55) parts, I have altered the lyrics completely for those parts meaning it doesn't actually translate but is my own interpretation for those lyrics. I thought it was a rather huge shame that the creators of those parts didn't alter the lyrics even slightly to match KBC's source material since that's rather the whole point of making a otoMAD so I did it for them.
3. Yes, if you didn't notice the parts at 3:00 [Beatmania IIDX 7th Style - Stoic], 04:49 [Kotoba no Puzzle Mojipittan OP], 8:49 [Battle! Champion] were altered visually to English but particularly Stoic as I've changed the Japanese system language to English completely so I'll also provide a separate video of that without the added subtitles.
4. Regarding the first part when it comes to Marisa Stole the Precious Thing part I'm a bit confused about the 「誰がダレガ can't be alive without you」translation, because I know that all English interpretations of that lyrics say 「誰がダレガ」 as "Who are you? Who are you? can't be alive without you" but shouldn't it be interpreted as Alice saying to Marisa "Who couldn't continue living without you?" due to her tsundere feelings towards Marisa? Anyways I did find an at.wiki page for the song that explains the meaning of it: https://w.atwiki.jp/aniwotawiki/pages/16297.html

Important correction: The english translation for this video was done by a different user on YouTube. The Nico ID of that upload is a reupload which was grabbed from the YT original.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NwRIVbkOH4 [Play] 【English Sub】 AGK Sings Multiple Lovers
The reason that the Nico upload is still older is because the original uploader, due to having translated a lot of different source material from Nico, has gotten one of their channels terminated in the past, then reuploaded this safe video to one of their several other accounts.
The original uploader's "English Sub" playlists:

Start off with a classic. Due to how word processing dictionaries worked, it only worked with whatever the locale of the document was set to. It wasn't as universal or seamless as it is now using multi-language dictionaries, so a lot of typos and grammatical errors were made a result.

Another classic, the "Duwang" subculture within the greater JoJo fandom. With how much better MTL and AI translations are getting with manga, I doubt we'll see something like this again, unless fans continue to keep the spirit alive through sheer brute force.

The AVGN (warrants his own /www/ or /vg/ thread, arguably) introduced many to these classic blunders: Ghost Busters' and Double Dragon's famous errors.

When I made this thread, this was the second example I considered using. I am grateful it was so poignant.

I am reminded of what they did to metal gear.
