thunder force 4 has 0 flaws. For me it's my favorite shmup, the perfect game. Playing them backwards, 3 was underwhelming in comparison, but I somehow enjoyed 2 more. I remember being stuck on the level preceding that boss, and how proud I felt when I beat it. I've only got to the final topdown level a few times, but haven't beat it.

I feel like thats funny because usually as a series grows, sometimes the later games usually are shit.

I finished Thunder Force III. It's a lot easier than the previous game. In fact, this may be the easiest shmup I've ever played. I had to record a whole level for the webm because the bosses all go down in seconds.
Still, I think this game is generally superior to Thunder Force II. Taking away the top-view levels keeps things focused and coherent, and the level design feels more intentional. Again, it leans into the variety of weapons as the main strategic element.
The graphics are greatly improved, not only with better sprites, but also some cool parallax effects and foreground elements, among other things. Likewise, the soundtrack has more nuance and longer loops.
As well-made as it is, this game is easy to recommend, especially for beginners. It might warrant a replay on a higher difficulty eventually, but first I'll move on to Thunder Force IV.

The emulation on the xbox systems, for it's "backwards compatibility" is unreliable, and in many cases has major glitches or bugs that'll make your game damn near unplayable, such as getting the black screen of death or getting your game frozen. Even now in the current year i'll be playing morrowind on the new xbox series x, and although the graphics are cleaned up, the trade off is unstable gameplay where opening up a tab too quick might fuck up the game. Hell, the game might say "fuck you" and quit anyway.
A direct reminder
>Supported Original Xbox and 360 games will run within an emulator and have access to certain Xbox One features, such as recording and broadcasting gameplay. Games do not run directly from discs. A repackaged form of the game is downloaded automatically when a supported game is inserted, while digitally-purchased games will automatically appear for download in the user's library once available. As with Xbox One titles, if the game is installed using physical media, the disc is still required for validation purposes.
Your system requires wifi to download the game from the store, the system CANNOT read the files from the disk. This is the same with people who own an xbox 360, internet is required (also a new hard drive) to access your original xbox games. Most of the problems actually availible on the 360 emulator for original xbox games have not been patched so if you get the black screen of death its microsoft being fuckers and not you or your systems.
Here's another unpatched bug from peacewalker, on the xbox series x, in the year of our lord 2023
Was playing the secret monster hunter level, and while i was fighting a monster he launched a fireball that gave the game INCREDIBLE LAGto the point where the game crashed and refused to open for a very long while.
Playstation, has NATIVE backwards compatibility. It has the chip that can actually read whatever disc depending on the system. As an example, the ps2 can play ps1 games natively, an earlier version of the ps3 can play ps, and ps2 games. Ps4 cannot play ps3 games. ps5 CAN play ps4 games natively, without emulation. There are problems, games might get bugs that cannot be patched, maybe issues with AA and some games not being playable.
This is a fair warning for those interested in investing in a new console and thinking you can somehow enjoy your older games on newer systems without a hitch.

With that out of the way, how are GB/GBA games handling with emulators? I'm assuming that there might be problems with certian games that use the internal clock as an example like pokemon.

Have you ever heard of a game that was going to come out, But it wasn't what you expected? Did you ever see a game that was canceled that had an exelent story or idea that was shelved for no reason? Did you ever play a game, Only to discover the game wasn't completed? Maybe you saw cut content in a game that was unused but still would have been great if it was added? The goal of this thread is to discuss wasted potential in video games, And to explore what they could have been.

Dark Deity is one game that, from a story standpoint, failed to live up to its potential. Gameplay-wise, it is similar to the Fire Emblem series, with well-executed gameplay similar to that of that series. The gameplay was what I loved the game for. The story itself is completely forgettable. I beat the game last month, and I've already forgotten the story. The conversation between the characters I unlocked was a chore to read through too. Have you ever played a game where the gameplay was good, but the story was bad?

Morrowind makes me mad because todd howard was the director, The story of the game is so rich, And so much could have come to a sequal but instead came oblivion which for its time looked terrible and the story itself is watered down and even slightly non-canon and then all the other shit that came after.
Sometimes i can only imagine if morrowind was directed by someone else and what would have came from it.

Another game by God Howard himself that comes to mind is Fallout: New Vegas.
Part of the problem is that they got the original fucking team that made the original fallout games, Gave them 15 fucking months to make it and the shitty fallout 3 engine as a means of making it.
The writing and a ton of the gaming aspects are fucking incredible but the shitty copy-pasted engine thats held togeather by sting and glue is pretty much toast and the graphics are for shit along with tons of bugs.

i was reading a blog entry by chris avalone about the honest heart DLC and hpw they where inspired by old comicbooks and stuff and it was interesting and MAN does it suck to see such ideas wasted on a shit platform. hell the offical new vegas comic is pretty damn good. i almost feel like they could have told the entire damn story in comic book format but i guess i can understand the want for a game and the problems with working for shitty gaming companies.

Handholding really does piss all over a good game and i feel like it also just pisses all over the player, as if they "aren't good enough". I mean, do they really need to paint everything neon yellow and have 50 map pointers and some retard yelling at you in order for you to move forward in a game? Depending on the game, isn't getting lost a good thing? Aren't highlighted objects immersion breaking? In a game like bioshock it actually fucking worked, all this time the handholding and the "you must do this thing" was brainwashing! It hits you like a fucking truck. If you do need a "guide" in game, why not make him or her unreliable? Not everyone is a human computer who knows everything. Wouldn't it be bonkers if the guide fucked up along the way by giving wring information, and if you actually payed attention you could find the right path?

Over the last few years, my video game backlog has become bigger and bigger to the point that I don't know if I'll ever run out of games to play. People of working age seem to experience more game backlogs for a variety of reasons. In this thread, we will document our progress in whatever game we are playing. In this thread, we will be encouraged to finish games that we have already started. Your updates don't have to be much just do them to encourage yourself. I'll start. Recently I've started the Square Enix RPG Live a Live. Initially, I chose to play as a ninja character. I like fighting everyone I can. Usually, I poison the character and allow the enemy to die from a distance. The campaign has more to offer, but so far it's been fun.

I ended up beating the final boss in three tries. It was satisfying because this has been a 120 hours of gameplay and it was nice to say that I was done. It was a good game but it got to me with how much grinding I did at the end.

I feel guilty that i haven't ever finshed beating majora's mask. A part of me wants to find the 3Ds version, the other wants to boot up my gamecube copy, although to be honest i also have a massive backlog of games im playing.
Anonymous Fri 18/04/2025 12:22:48 AM 1 day ago No. 1209
I find that game backlogs are only a means to an end— having fun. Games exist for the purpose solely. To this end, if it is fun, it is worth playing, and if you are no longer having fun, it is best to stop. Many games seem to be built around the idea of "beating" the game and reaching the end, but for me, games exist to be enjoyed. Perhaps this is a form of coping, but I have often walked away after some time without necessarily finishing many games because I've had enough. Some games overstay their welcome, others are quick experiences that leave you wanting more. Either way I think this philosophy is good for games as an experience to enjoy, rather than a burden to diminish their enjoyment. The very best of games are finished when you stop playing them, rather than when the game tells you they are done.

I am having fun but the issue is sometimes I need keep going so I can fully enjoy the games. There have been so many games I've dropped even though I was having fun because life happens. Posting in this thread motivates me to continue because it shows me I am having fun and there is no reason to stop if you are having fun and have enough to say to make a post.

They overuse him in my opinion I would have more lore about Erik or Jade. I was more drawn to those characters and got frustrated with how he got more time to shine.

Putting off fire red to try out some of my DS games, Hotel Dusk is calling to me.

This thread is the type of nostalgia thread about gaming, gaming culture, and so on, and finally, a discussion on the final game you played when your childhood was over/ the last game you played when you decided to quit gaming. The last game I have vivid memories about is Punch Club. This game had elements of a beat 'em-up along with aspects of management. What drew me to the game was the setting. I remember fighting the teenage mutant ninja turtles. It was a hard fight, but I ended up pulling through. I'd recommend Punch Club, and the second game seems to be coming up this year.

Spyro the dragon is something else. I might be biased because i grew up with games that had shitty low poly graphics but even now it looks, plays and sounds good. I remember playing spyro when i was 5 at a friends house and the crash bandicoot racing game. But spyro still hits me like a ton of bricks when ever i remember it. I was playing spyro remastered recently and its great don't get me wrong, it doesn't beat the original.

Playing games on the bionicle website was fun, two of the games gave you FREE music like from paramore, and a dutch band called cryoshell, the ones i'm most nostalgic for was the mata nui online games, the music for one thing was incredible, the visuals was nice because you can finally see what it looked like in the books, and i love the gameplay, classic point and click with fun minigames. I remember one that was basically soccer and it was fun as heck.

So that's it, i finally beat dead space 3. When chapter 14 starts you have to deal with the "ubermorph" and the only advice i can say is to chop off all his limbs, freeze the fucker and fucking RUN. (if you fully upgraded your stasis, that gives you 10 seconds, not ideal but still exploitable) I had my suit fully upgraded, and my two weapons and it was a pain in the ass until i realised nothing mattered anymore. Literally just skip all the enemies unless you have no choice but to shoot a nigger and just fucking book it. Also if you still have money left buy the shit you really need, ammo, health, and nodes are the most important.

My thoughts? A total reverse of dead space 1's ending, kind of nice. Too bad dead space 3 exists, i own it but i kinda don't want to play it. I kimda want to check out the severed DLC but at the same time i have other games to play and it took me too long to beat dead space 2 lol.

So did you beat dead space 3 or dead space 2? Also severed DLC is only available on console and takes place in between the first few chapters of dead space 2 iirc.
I think dead space 3 was the first game from the series that I actually finished because it was nowhere scary as the first two games and I really can't handle actual scary games.

I finally watched that piece of shit called dead space aftermath and I think the part about Strauss has to be one of my most favorite dead space media. I love the representation of how he's slowly driven insane by the marker to kill his own wife and daughter that by the end of it he doesn't even know that he's done it. It's also like the only media apart from the dead space comics where the technicalities behind the marker is somewhat explained(?) https://youtu.be/HN5Kwv0Fb6k?t=1749 [Play] https://youtu.be/HN5Kwv0Fb6k?t=1995 [Play]

Something i ignored on my last two playthroughs of dead space was the audio, I thought it was clever that you can hear his heartbeat when he's scared and you can hear him gasp and wheeze when he's low on health or exausted, which was pretty fucking clever. I guess i really wasn't paying attention back then. It gave the game a bit of a claustrophobic feel.

Pretty simple: talk about retro styled games. By that I mean games with stricter punishments for failure, and generally are designed not as an experience expected to be finished, but a challenge meant to be conquered (or otherwise any game made 25+ years ago). I love these kinds of action games despite not being very good at them.
Talk about games you like / dislike, their developers and publishers, games you beat, parts you're stuck on, etc.
If you're into coin-op games you can boast your highscores and 1cc's here and challenge other anons to beat them

I haven't played many puzzle games to be fair, but I've enjoyed puzzle 'n desu for the snes. It is a cute game where you have to push colored blocks around to make them appear in a line of three or more which makes them disappear. It also has a timer so you have to think quickly, although with emulators cheating is easy (I didn't). The music is neat, the visuals are pleasant, overall it feels quite nice to play although I've never finished it and recently have lost my saves after a retroarch update.
It is available in japanese only but it's not hard to guess what menu items mean and the story is illustrated.

If you were a real gamer you'd be able to imagine the story as you go. The selfless I block. The treacherous Z and S blocks, only playing nice with their own kind. The diplomatic T. The stalwart O block, unwilling to compromise its principles for anything... they are all characters as vivid as anything from Lord of the Rings and familiar as friends to me.

Pokemon trainers you fought against can have another fight with you, and i noticed they also are in some cases tougher and higher level. Is this feature in other games? Have i been blind?
